As was rumored in March, it looks like Call of Duty is headed back to the World War II well for another outing. A new countdown timer has appeared on the official site for Call of Duty: WWII, announcing what we already kind of figured – Call of Duty is going back to where it all began. The worldwide reveal of the game will happen on April 26th at 10 AM PST, which will be our first look at the game. Activision also released a blog post going through the game’s WWII roots, if you’re interested in how the series has tackled the war from different perspectives each time.
Several important things to note here: first of all, this is Sledgehammer Games’s second swing at the Call of Duty franchise since their incredible debut with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (a game which I hold in very high regard for the series); secondly, this is the first time any of the major shooters have gone back to WWII in a very long time. Battlefield 1 went to World War I last year, but Call of Duty took itself to space with Infinite Warfare. Ironically, Infinity Ward began this series, and they were actually the ones to have taken it to its furthest point in the timeline, too.
There’s not much that we know about the game yet, but I’m honestly not so much surprised that this is happening, but that the team behind one of the more inventive games in the franchise is tasked with breathing life into an era that has been done to death. World War II games are harder to come by now, but there was a time not so long ago when you could go into any game shop and ask for a shooter, and you’d pretty much guaranteed a WWII shooter. So we’ll see if Sledgehammer can revive the setting in an interesting and compelling way.
Let us know in the comments below what you think of Call of Duty: WWII and whether you’re interested in playing another World War II game.
