The Mario Tennis games are probably the best Mario sports titles, ever. Period. So it’s a no-brainer for Nintendo to bring the popular sports franchise to the Nintendo Switch. During today’s Nintendo Direct Mini, Nintendo announced Mario Tennis Aces would be coming to the Switch in Spring 2018.
What is most compelling about this announcement is that Mario Tennis Aces will feature a story mode that includes boss battles. This is the first time the series has featured a story mode since the GameBoy Advance title, Mario Tennis: Power Tour. The story mode looks like it will bring a bunch of interesting challenges to players that still revolve around the mechanics of tennis while also bringing players to unique environments that helps give the game its individual personality.
Gameplay seems similar to previous titles in the franchise, but the Nintendo Direct mentioned “new wrinkles in tennis gameplay” and cited predicting other player’s strokes. It will be cool to see some update to the tennis mechanics, but I’d be perfectly content with just a vanilla Mario Tennis experience.
It’s great to see Mario Tennis Aces coming to the Nintendo Switch and offering up a Story mode for those who just want to play some tennis and enjoy the Mario aesthetic. Will you be picking up the game when it launches this Spring? Let us know in the comments below.
