THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE CABIN IN THE WOODS IN THIS ARTICLE. IF YOU HAVE YET TO SEE THE MOVIE BUT WANT TO, THEN TURN BACK NOW!
Familiar with the movie known as The Cabin In The Woods? You should be, because it’s awesome. Well, a couple of the monsters that showed up in the flick (not saying when because, seriously, you NEED to go see Cabin In The Woods) happen to bear a striking similarity to some of the Infected from Valve’s co-op, zombie slaughter-em-up Left 4 Dead. Turns out, this wasn’t an accident. It was very, very intentional and, during a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with Cabin director Drew Goddard, it was revealed that they were there for some Cabin themed Left 4 Dead 2 DLC.
Reddit user ForsakenBacon was the one who posed the question to Mr. Goddard, wondering if the Infected were a special Easter Egg or just a co-incidental design. Drew’s response was two-fold, first on revealing that it was going to be part of a game, second explaining in short terms how it would work.
We actually were going to do a downloadable L4D2 expansion pack, where you’d fight in the Cabin world, but then MGM went bankrupt so the delay squashed it. But the people at Valve were still cool enough to let us use some of their monsters to fill the cubes in the background (I had a lot of cubes to fill.)
By the way — the game was gonna be amazing. You were gonna be able to play in both the upstairs “Cabin in the Woods” world and the downstairs “facility” world with all the monsters. Believe me, I HATE all video games based on movies, they always suck, but porting Cabin into Left For Dead felt like the right fit. It pains me that it didn’t happen.
Utter shame. And if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll perfectly understand why I say that. Still, this is what the unofficial modding community is for, isn’t it? Realising failed projects and putting awesome things into awesome games? So, if there’s anyone out there who too realises that this is an awesome idea that needs turning into reality some time last month, then get on it! For the rest of us!
The Cabin In The Woods is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray and, seriously people, you NEED to see it!
