Retro PC gamers may remember the Ultima franchise, a series of high popular RPG games that began in 1981. One of the most popular instalments was the 1992 dungeon crawler spin off, Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. It was one of the first RPGs to feature a first person perspective in a 3D world and was a huge inspiration behind the Deus Ex and Elder Scrolls franchises. The game got a sequel, Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds, in 1993 but there was no third game, until now.
After over 20 years the franchise is finally making a return. Underworld: Ascension is in development at OtherSide Entertainment, a new indie studio founded by the designer of the original Underworld, Paul Neurath. Tim Stellmach, the lead design for Underworld II is also on board.
There’s little to show as of yet but the mere fact that this game exists should be enough to excite Ultima fans.
