Day One of PAX Prime 2014 was about playing as many of the big Triple A games as possible. Day Two was geared more towards Indie games. Below are just a few of the games we sampled today.
Bearzerkers
Dev: Wildgrass Games
Located in the Indie-mini Megabooth at PAX Prime 2014 was our favorite game of the day, Bearzerkers. Played with up to four people, players take on the role of a critter who is trying to escape from a Panda bear. The object is to trap players by digging up rock walls so they have nowhere to run and thus devoured by the chasing bear. You can also collect power-ups and use them strategically to save your own hide or once again turn the tables on your opponents. And just so you know, these bears can’t be killed and as added fun the deeper you get into the game, another Panda will be set loose for double the chaotic fun. Wildgrass compares their title to “part Tron Cycles, part Nintendo Land and all chaotic multiplayer nonsense”.
Bearzerkers is being released on PC, Mac, and Linux with other platforms in the works.
Adventures of Pip
Dev: Tic Toc Games
Adventures of Pip takes players on a side-scrolling action journey where the main character, Pip, starts off as a single pixel. He and other low resolution characters are doomed to a life of servitude. The Skeleton Queen has reduced most of the inhabitants to a single pixel, like Pip. But story has it that a ghost knight named Sir William has given Pip the ability to use the powers of the bitstream. As he defeats enemies on his quest, he absorbs their pixels and increases in size, strength and fidelity. Along with his physical form, the game’s visuals, gameplay, and music evolve as well. However, Tic Toc Games has not made gameplay that simple, as with each evolution of Pip and his world, there is a balance to be had and learned.
The Kickstarter page can be accessed here. And the title has already been greenlit on Steam Greenlight. The Adventures of Pip is being shown on the 6th floor of PAX Prime in Seattle at Booth 7016.
Tales from the Borderlands
Dev: Telltale Games
One of our beloved franchises Borderlands is getting the Telltale treatment. At PAX Prime 2014, Telltale is giving fans the ability to play through the 1st 20-30 mins of Episode one.
When first starting the game, you’ll be jostled in your stance as you see the worlds of Gearbox and Telltale collide. In some spots, especially the beginning, it is a little rough. But once Telltale has you sucked into the story, as they are ought to do, you quickly forget some of the weird visuals and quirky cutscenes.
Due to the fact this is a story-by-decision game, we don’t want to reveal what took place in the first episode but it was a good introduction to the characters and boy was it nice being back on Pandora.
Hitman Sniper
Dev: Square Enix
Square Enix is back with another mobile version of Hitman. This time they’re releasing a mobile version called Hitman Sniper and it will be free of charge.
The premise of the game is that there are certain marks which need to be taken down. You could take the mark down and move on to the next challenge but where would the fun be in taking care of business in that manner. Instead players are competing against friends online to get the highest scores. In order to get a successful score, players will not only complete “scenario-driven contracts” but also complete in-match objectives. Other marks can be assassinated using environmental elements such as fire explosions and large fans. You’ll want to be precise with your targets and not too aggressive as you’ll then spook the targets, which in turn causes them to flee and you fail the objective.
Hitman Sniper is all about re-playability, earning higher scores, and exploring the map for as many combo scenarios to drive up your score. The game will be released on mobile devices and tablets later this year.
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
Dev: Dennaton Games/Devolver Digital
The Hotline Miami guys from Dennaton Games are back with another installment of Hotline Miami, which was in an instant cult classic by so many retro killing fans.
The Sequel is located in two locations at PAX Prime 2014, they have a few kiosks at the Devolver Booth on the 6th floor and two as well at the Indie MEGABOOTH. When we stopped in to talk to the duo at Dennaton Games they made no bones about it that HM2 is more of the same with a little polish and somewhat of a deeper dive into the story and characters.
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is where players will reprise the role several unique characters of whom have”murderous minds”. Each with a penchant for killing, they each carry out their own business in unique murders. The game, once again, takes what was so special about the original and continues to deliver bloody combat, with a retro neon art style, and soundtrack made for murder. Sign us up!
