The name of the article isn’t a prank. However, there might be some people who might be unfamiliar. If you’re one of them, DENUVO is quite infamous for being an intrusive anti-piracy solution for PC games. Unfortunately, it’s coming to PlayStation 5 now. So, it’s time to say your prayers and wonder whether or not the program will hold the games on the PS5 back. I mean way more than they are already held back as is anyway.
A Cheating Problem? On the PS5?
Okay, okay. I know that by this point the first question you’ll ask is “Why?”. Especially because console gaming’s closed ecosystem makes it less susceptible for piracy or cheating. However, that doesn’t mean that this is impenetrable or that there won’t be people trying to hack the system. We’ve seen this happen with systems such as the Switch, for example. With it, users could basically start homebrewing the system through a hardware exploit that needed to have a second iteration of the system to combat.
However, some of you might point out that the PlayStation 5 is actually more robust in fighting against tampering attempts. While that might be true at the moment, that doesn’t mean that it will not happen at some point. I mean, we’ve recently had that PlayStation 5 crypto mining scare not too long ago. While that rumor might be faked, Wololo has recently disclosed that the system’s internal browser might be a good entry-point for hacking the device.
DENUVO Coming to PS5?!
This brings us back to DENUVO. The parent company Irdeto announced that their technology will be available for PS5 developers. So, if you’re a developer looking to throttle your games under the pretense of kernel-level anti-cheat, you finally got a solution! DENUVO says that its middleware protects game logic or data, preventing cheaters from changing sensitive variables and ensuring its trustworthiness. The objective of the anti-cheat is to bring fairness and fun back to gaming by providing its Anti-Cheat solution to all developers who want to protect their games and gamers from hackers and cheaters on PlayStation 5.
The anti-cheat system helps game developers protect sensitive game logic or data, preventing cheaters from changing sensitive variables and ensuring their trustworthiness. “Cheating ruins video games for honest players,” said Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director of Irdeto. “This can lead to lower engagement, game traffic, and shrinking revenues for game publishers. We are really proud to be able to help the world’s most talented developers to bring rich experiences for gamers on Playstation 5.”
Of course, people well-versed in gaming know more about the intrusive nature of the software. Looking at gaming benchmarks from sites like Extreme Tech, you’ll notice that almost every game DENUVO runs on had a negative impact on the game’s framerate.
That’s it for now. However, what do you think of this announcement regarding DENUVO anti-cheat? Do you think games on the PlayStation 5 will become hindered by the technology? Make sure to tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
