Need for Speed Payback already had a slight reveal last week when EA announced it prior to E3 2017. They teased back then that the game would feature at their EA Play event, and they definitely didn’t hold back. A gameplay trailer was released which shows precisely what I suspected: a very The Fast and the Furious-inspired racing game. You can check out the explosive trailer below.
Need for Speed Payback‘s story follows Tyler, Jess and Mac as they take on The House. The video above shows a set piece moment called The Highway Heist that involves players catching up to a truck while taking out other cars on the way. It ends with a very Dominic Toretto moment as Jess jumps onto the truck and then the truck explodes as she drives a car out of the back of the semi. And then its time to “even the odds” as Jess, Tyler and Mac confront a police helicopter right before the trailer ends.
That’s a lot to take in for a series thats big moments were mostly geared towards gameplay-driven experiences. The thrill of being chased by cops and narrowly escaping is probably still present in Payback but it seems like the game’s cinematic storytelling is going to be very prevalent in the gameplay too. There was a moment when the truck barreled through the highway in a cutscene which then had flaming debris when it cut back to the gameplay which seemed like a neat way to meld the two.
Need for Speed Payback releases on November 10th, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin. Let us know in the comments below whether you’re excited for the new direction the series is taking and stay tuned to BagoGames for more coverage of EA and the rest of E3 2017.
