Well it’s October and, like many other gamers, we’re using it as an excuse to replay P.T. and think of what could have been. Oh, and playing some great horror games both new and old that thankfully were released! This of course got us all talking about our favorite horror games and which ones are #1 on our long and winding list. It was pretty tough but we were finally able to narrow it down. We wanted to share with you all what makes these games so special – and why you should go play them as soon as possible!
The horror title that had the biggest influence on me would have to be the original Silent Hill for the PlayStation. I had upgraded from my Sega Genesis to the PlayStation only a couple years prior and the closest thing I’d played to a horror title was Resident Evil: The Director’s Cut, with it’s cornball jump scares. As this was long before the prominence of the Internet, I made my purchase decision based on the back of Silent Hill’s jewel case while standing in a KB Toys and I was not prepared for the psychological terror and disturbing imagery that lay ahead of me at all. Silent Hill opened a door, showing me that video games were capable of far more than I had ever imagined and for that, it will always have a special place in my heart.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica is not only my favorite Resident Evil title but also quite possibly my favorite title to date. It is a close tie between that and The Evil Within, but Code Veronica eeked its way in due to the fact that it really opened the scope of the Resident Evil story at the time. It also brought back fan favorite Chris Redfield and finally reunited the siblings. Plus I think that everyone was happy when Steve was finally transformed into that beast. I know I was not the only who didn’t want a Leonardo DiCaprio clone running around my favorite universe.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is without a doubt my favorite horror game. It also has the privilege of being one of my favorite games period. The atmosphere and immersive story are of course huge contributing factors but I also love the uneasiness and fear that is felt throughout the entire game. You are constantly moving through this incredible story and the entire time your heart is just frozen while you try to hold your breath to pinpoint where the noises of pipes banging in the dark are coming from. It’s incredible and you need to play it!
