Mortal Shell is an interesting new action RPG that looks inspired by From Software’s titles. The game was revealed last week and is being developed by the all-new developer Symmetry, and published by PlayStack.
Mortal Shell Details
Players will take on the role of a humanoid vessel amidst a world plagued with monsters, and will be tasked to “track down hidden sanctums of devout followers” and “harvest the sacred glands.” To achieve this goal and conquer your foes, you’ll have to possess the Mortal Shells of past warriors to gain their lost abilities. Each type of mortal shell will serve as a class of its own with skill trees assigned to them. Players will be able to strengthen their bond with each shell to upgrade abilities and weapons.
Developer Cold Symmetry mentions that Mortal Shell was “built upon the ruthless traditions of the Souls-like genre.” So it’ll also have similar gameplay mechanics. The game features strategic combat, which includes dodging and parrying attacks, not unlike Sekiro’s combat system. Its also stated that magic would play a significant role in Mortal Shell, and the game will have a nonlinear campaign.
The visuals look impressive and have an interesting take on magic, with both ice and fire magic seen in the trailer above. Cold Symmetry, the team working on this, is a studio of just 15 people, which is pretty impressive for a game of this caliber. The game looks very interesting, and while similar to the FromSoftware games, it seems like it’ll build upon those elements in a more unique way than seen before. I look forward to seeing how well they do with that.
Mortal Shell is slated to launch in Q3 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can find out more details on its official site.
