The classic PC RPG Planescape: Torment will finally receive a follow-up, according to rights-owner Brian Fargo.
Originally released in 1999 and developed by Black Isle Studios, a division of Interplay, Planescape: Torment has since become a cult classic and is still beloved by many fans today for its dialogue, characterization, and atmosphere.
However, the follow-up to the game apparently won’t be a direct sequel but rather more of a spiritual successor, since it won’t be set in the Planescape world of the original but a new location named Numenera.
“The more we explored the Numenera setting, the clearer it became that it’s a natural fit for a Torment game,” Fargo explained. “Rather than overt links, we are trying to recapture the feeling that players experienced through PST – both while playing it and after having completed a playthrough. We will remain true to the essence of PST, but we’ll also be looking for ways to improve the areas in which PST could have been even better.”
Fargo is apparently considering Kickstarter as a means of funding the new game, which has no release window partly due to Fargo and inXile Entertainment currently being occupied with the development of Wasteland 2.
