Well, here’s something odd to wake up to. PlatinumGames has announced a new partnership with the Chinese giant Tencent. According to the announcement on the developer’s official website; the basis for the partnership is a capital investment from Tencent.
PlatinumGames’ Partnership With Tencent
If you need a refresher, Platinum is known for games such as Bayonetta, Astral Chain, and NieR: Automata. However, it seems like Platinum was expecting some concerns regarding their independence. The developer stated that their independence will not get affected after this partnership takes effect. As said by President and CEO, Kenichi Sato:
We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.
We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high quality games that stay true to our name.
Thank you as always for your continued support. Please look forward to what we have in store.
It seems like there are still concerns about the independence of game developers while partnered with Tencent. In fact, some are wary about Nintendo’s partnership. However, the Chinese gaming market is just way too important for any of these developers to turn down. In the end, there must be a source of income for the developers and gaming companies in the world.
What do you think about the partnership between PlatinumGames and Tencent? Do you think that this will not affect their independence as stated? What are your thoughts on the Chinese gaming market? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
