For those of you who haven’t heard already, there’s a new Pokémon anime TV special on the way based on the original games; Pocket Monsters Red & Green. You might be scratching your head over this, considering the original Pokémon anime was also based on those games. The adventures of Ash Ketchum many of us grew up with isn’t the most direct adaptation of the video game series though. Pocket Monsters: The Origin uses the original characters, stays true to the art style of the games, and you know what? It looks pretty awesome. Check out the Japanese preview video embedded above.
Before you get too excited… you should remember it’s just a special, unfortunately meaning this is a one-off affair. That said, what if it wasn’t? What if this was a brand new, full-blown anime series? Is a Pokémon Special-style anime exactly what the older fans want? Or would it just hurt the original anime series, currently trucking along towards episode 800?
Pocket Monsters: The Origin airs on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 2nd. One more interesting tidbit courtesy of the Japanese Pokémon twitter feed — the anime features Junko Takeuchi (the voice of Naruto Uzumaki) as protagonist Red, and Dr. Okido (Professor Oak to you and me) will be voiced by Katsuji Mori.
Disappointed this is only a one-episode deal? Or would a full series be overkill?
