The last game I will be talking about from EGX 2019 was the one I was by far the most impressed by. The demo itself was a polished sandbox type of level, showing off the gameplay and different aspects of the game to any passing gamers, however speaking to the developers made this game go from good to amazing in one conversation.
Recompile is a game entirely set within 1 second of real time, following a sentient AI that is escaping deletion inside the Mainframe. You take control of the AI exploring vast terrains, solving puzzles, hacking environments while scraping through intense combat to stay alive. The demo at EGX was simply one area with some puzzles, combat and a bunch of unlockable abilities, which showed off the game nicely but didn’t really give the scope of the entire project that I came to understand upon speaking to Dante Smith and James Marshall from Phigames, the developers of Recompile. I also have to say the excitement and appreciation these guys give each other and to their game really shows me their passion in gaming and that they are proud of what they have created.
The game is currently around 75% complete, featuring over 50 levels across several environments such as jungle, desert, city biomes with a full scale narrative including 5 different endings! Each ending is depicted by your playstyle, as you progress enemies will react depending on if you’re aggressive, passive or anything inbetween. There’s many different weapons and abilities, hidden items and areas which become unlockable after you revisit them later in the game, both a linear and fully explorable ways to play, and overall just a huge world being beautifully crafted by a small team of only around 4 people, with two of them doing most of the work! I honestly can’t express how impressed I am by the scale that they have accomplished with such a stunning look and finish they have already attained.
Now I was told the game should be released sometime next year, but they are still constantly adding ideas into the game and putting as much as they possibly can to make it something really special. In terms of the graphics, Recompile has a strong and stylish look to it, and with the addition of RTX Ray Tracing (another possible addition) the game will look simply stunning. It’s hard to believe this isn’t a triple A title, as it played just like one and has me just as excited. I don’t know whether the game will get an early access release on Steam before it’s release, but it does have a Steam page you can wishlist the game at right here. It should also be coming to console but… they haven’t announced which ones yet so you’ll have to follow us or them to hear the latest! If you haven’t been convinced yet, watch the trailer below and please check them out, this is a Metroidvania action puzzle platformer you do not want to miss.
Recompile looked epic at EGX 2019. It will be interesting to see what’s in store gaming in Euro 2020. Keep an eye on BagoGames, as we’ll be following game announcements from EGX, Blizzcon and beyond for this year and next.
