Apollo Legend (real name Benjamin Smith), a long-time member of the speedrunning community, was found dead in his apartment on December 31st. Prior to his death, he had posted a video on YouTube on December 30th that contained a link to a suicide note. The video was removed shortly after due to violating YouTube’s terms of service. However, it has been re-uploaded later for archival purposes.
Apollo cited several health issues as reasons for his suicide. Scoliosis and a constant state of pain was a major reason. In addition to his physical illness, he also suffered severe mental health issues. His body was discovered by the police who were notified about his suicide on December 31st, 2020.
Deputy Hagdoll just confirmed to @BanishedJourno @nicholasdeorio @AugieRFC and two others that @Apollo_Legend_ was found deceased earlier. His family has been notified, but no other information was provided. I understand Trust, but Verify and so my feelings aren't hurt.

A Controversial Figure
Apollo Legend was a controversial figure in the speedrunning community. While he helped expose competition legend Billy Mitchell for cheating, he also received a lot of criticism for his views and outspoken nature. He would often criticize GDQ and other speedrunners. Not only that, but he was called out for his behavior worsening over the years. Before his journalistic phase, he was controversial for using speedrunning clips without consent.
We speculate that he wanted one last controversy to happen as his suicide note mentions EZScape and DarkViper as influences on his suicide. Both figures seemingly have no actual influence on his suicide. Regardless, this is purely speculation and in no way should be taken as a fact. This has been a loss that currently has the speedrunning community divided. EZScape and DarkViperAU have both responded to the letter after the events. However, the story is still developing in this aspect.
We would like to use this final moment to extend our condolences to Benjamin’s family and acquaintances for their loss. Hopefully, the community will learn a few things from this loss.
