Titanfall 2 is becoming somewhat of a sleeper hit, which seems a little ridiculous due to the pedigree behind it. Titanfall 2 is the newest release from Respawn Entertainment, the team made up of former Call of Duty developers. It launched just over a month ago, sandwiched between Battlefield 1, another game from Titanfall‘s publisher EA, and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, the newest shooter from Infinity Ward – former home to many in the Titanfall camp. Titanfall 2 has received plenty of critical praise, however the sales for the game have appeared to be merely adequate, which is not too shocking compared to when it was released. Enter the upcoming free trial weekend.
Starting on Wednesday, November 30, on EA Access and Origin, players will be able to play the full Titanfall 2 multiplayer experience, and on December 2 the multiplayer trial opens up to all players on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Origin for PC. Players will be able to access all that the Titanfall 2 multiplayer has to offer, and progress will be saved, so if a player decides to upgrade, they can continue on right where they left off when they purchase the game. Players will also be able to sample the first free map for the game, Angel City, a remake of a popular map from the first Titanfall. Angel City is part of the first of many planned, free DLC offerings for the game, and Respawn has stated many times that all future DLC will be free. The only micro-transactions will come in the form of cosmetic items, such as paint jobs, with none affecting gameplay.
It seems crazy that a title with as much pedigree and praise as Titanfall 2 has not seen more impressive sales, however Respawn and EA are banking on this first multiplayer trial weekend as a way to convince more players to pick up the game. Blizzard’s Overwatch has done this a number of times this year, and it seems to continue to pay off for them, so we shall see if this helps Titanfall really take off and become a premiere shooter in a very crowded marketplace.
