Another week deeper into Oscar season and we’ve got a bunch of big hitters to discuss. Not content with reviewing one movie this week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss several big releases that will likely vie for award consideration. The two big ones we discuss, however, are Manchester by the Sea (listen to Dylan discuss it as part of VIFF 2016) and Nocturnal Animals (listen to Chris discuss it as part of TIFF 2016, and read his review here). The former is directed by Kenneth Lonergan, and stars Casey Affleck, Lucas Hedges, Kyle Chandler and Michelle Williams. Meanwhile, the latter is directed by Tom Ford, with a cast that is comprised of Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon and a bunch of other well-known actors in small roles. We talk about how these films might play out come Oscar time, and where they stand for our own personal lists.
However, that’s not all we discuss. Dylan saw Moana so I let him talk about the recent Disney release. I saw Captain Fantastic and quickly try to convince Dylan he should watch it. Then we both indulge in the latest Jeff Nichols’ film, Loving, starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. His second film this year, in fact. We also explore the third season of You’re The Worst, a show that you should definitely be watching if you’re not already. For some reason, Dylan wants to hear me talk about The Shallows, so that happens as well.
There’s some controversial news to talk about and Dylan’s collected a couple year-end lists from other publications, as well as the Gotham Award winners. Meanwhile, there isn’t much for Blu-rays this week, but you can listen to us talk about one blu-ray release, The BFG, on a previous podcast.
Next week, we will be reviewing Krisha, a film that seems to be getting some love already. It’s on VOD, so feel free to watch it and join the discussion.
