It seems this year has been quite a year for remakes, with the advent of The Resident Evil 2 remake, its successor title Resident Evil 3 on its way; and not to mention the most anticipated Remake (that would be the Final Fantasy 7 remake). This got me thinking about some great games also deserving the remake touch up.
These are classics most gamers know and or are fond of. With all the remakes we’ve had this past year, I believe these games should also get a turn in the limelight.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
The first on this list is a game a lot of you may have heard off but not played, its a tad old but still gold. The gameplay isn’t remarkable yet still passable, and at times can be quite fun. The gameplay isn’t the main draw of the game. What is though, is your character, the way you build them, and the world in which they inhabit.
What’s also unique to Vampire: The masquerade is the narrative way it tells the story of the vampire clans and how it forces you to make decisions that will impact them, while also building your character along the way.
It’d be great to see a modern remake of the game without the technical faults and limitations of the original, but for now, we can at least settle on its sequel expected next year.
Silent Hill
I’m a fan of the Silent Hill series and have played many titles in the franchise, but not the original. While some might argue it’s a bad game, it’s still a solid title in its own right as it started a beloved series. Yet, I could not get into it due to the substantial technical limitations it has. From the jarring camera movement and clunky controls to the audio issues and god awful loading times.
Unlike the other games in this list, Silent Hill was greatly affected by its limitations. Strip away what’s holding it back with a proper modern remake, however, leave what keeps it unique such as the ambiance, concept, monsters, and especially the fog, and you have a survival horror that could rival even the great Resident Evil 2 remake.
Dino Crisis
Its been twenty years since Dino Crisis released. Yet, despite it being quite a success and a huge fan favorite, you’d think we’d have had a remake by now. If you’re one of the unlikely few that don’t know what Dino crisis is, its basically Resident Evil but with dinosaurs instead of zombies. Though, it adopted many of Resident Evil’s mechanics and styles. Such as the inventory, health system, and puzzles.
Obviously, the story’s different, it includes a significant and well rounded female lead, and is more action-oriented. With the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake and now with Resident Evil 3 on its way, there couldn’t be a better time for Dino Crisis to make its debut on modern consoles while also appealing to a fresh new audience.
Bully
My all-time favorite Rockstar game and a game I believe is the most deserving of a full remake. Sure, it had a remaster for the modern consoles and a Scholarship Edition for PC and Xbox 360. But had little to no significant changes (a graphical touch-up and some new mini-games). In the absence of a sequel, a full remake would satisfy fans who wish to revisit Bullworth Academy. And after 12 years since its release, a lot of us are bound to want just that.
Demon’s Souls
And finally, we have Demon’s souls, the main reason I wrote this article. FromSoftware’s first entry into the souls series back in 2009 is more than just a cult classic, as it laid the foundation for the Souls‘ series. Too bad the game is quite old and shows its age with the choppy framerate, laggy movement, less than impressive graphics, and awkward controls.
Despite all its drawbacks, its still a great game, and that’s why it deserves a remake. Plus a chance to introduce more fans to the series who otherwise cant without owning a PS3. With all the rumors of an actual remake/ remaster in development, and Miyazaki being open to the idea, it’d be nice if Fromsoft would stop teasing and give us a remake already, or a remaster. We’d take Anything we can get at his point, really.
Conclusion
These are just a few games that I believe deserves a fair shot for a remake. There’s a whole flurry of other beloved and successful titles out there deserving a remake just as much as the next. That said, if we can get even one of these games a remake, that’d be a win in my book.
