DOOM 2016 was a bit of a disappointment in the DLC department. All we got for that game was multiplayer DLC. In a game where the multiplayer was the weakest aspect. I think it showed how Bethesda in a real tone-deaf manner overestimated the popularity of the multiplayer mode since it wasn’t really fleshed out enough to be fun for players.
DOOM Eternal didn’t fare much better in the multiplayer department. In fact, in Eternal, the multiplayer feels like even more of an afterthought. There’s so far only been one mode, and while it’s fun it’s still only that. A singular multiplayer mode.
So it seems Bethesda and id Software are doing the right thing this time around. DOOM Eternal’s single-player campaign is already the stuff of legends. Like we stated in our review, the campaign might start out pretty hard. But once you get good at the game, and most important unlock more upgrades, the game becomes a lot of fun. It’s honestly one of the best FPS campaigns in recent memory, although not without some moments that are a bit hard to take seriously.
DOOM Eternal is getting an actual campaign DLC this time. The DLC, titled “The Ancient Gods, Part One” was just teased yesterday. According to id, we’ll see a full reveal at GamesCom 2020 on August 27.
The Fight Continues
Judging from what we can see in the teaser, it seems the DLC will take the Doomslayer into a new realm. And if the title is anything to go by, it’s the realm of the Ancient Gods. Is this the same realm as the one we see at the end of DOOM Eternal? Will we see the return of Khan Maykr? It certainly looks like we’ll be fighting more of the same sentinel type enemies we saw in DOOM Eternal.
So are you ready to rip and tear some more? We certainly are and are looking forward to the full reveal on August 27. We were hoping for more DOOM story content, and it seems Bethesda is willing to deliver on that. Let’s just hope they don’t sneak in another rootkit this time.
