Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage Review

Typhoon Studios’ Journey to the Savage Planet still holds me rather positively from the beginning of this year. I started this game on Xbox One with relatively high expectations, which were partly fulfilled. It’s a fun game with great humor, colorful areas, and creative creatures. The game felt almost like an acid trip, but fortunately a pleasant one.

It didn’t really take long before we could start with the latest DLC within this crazy adventure game. However, is it worth your time and hard-earned money? Well, my dear explorer, take your favorite sassy AI and your low wages with you, because we are going on an adventure to Boomerdale on the planet DL-C1. Here is my Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage review for Xbox One.

DL-C1 PLAYS IT SAFE

What would you think if you bought a whole planet and some crappy organization would mess up everything? That is, of course, not possible, so Kindred will send you to find out what is going on. The world is beautifully decorated with exotic plants, sunny beaches, and some new creatures. It has a very different look and feel than the base game planet you saw in my main review on Xbox One, which is something really positive to see.

However, the world is mostly filled with creatures we have seen before. I mean, since it is a different planet, how can the same creatures live on it? Does not make sense! Anyway, they indicate that this is also somewhat linked to the lore, but you I still feel that apart from a few new tricks, not many new things have been added. Fortunately, the new robots that the developers added are quite delicious.

Combat finally received a bit of an overhaul in this DLC and you can see and feel that when you fight the mechanical guys. You will need your entire arsenal to take out these steel acorns, providing some needed depth. The shooting itself still feels a bit mediocre, but at least it is a step in the right direction. In my Journey to the Savage Planet review, I already mentioned that the combat in itself did not feel very nice. In fact, below average.

The DLC shows that they can certainly do better, but I hope that in the future the player will also feel a bit more powerful. The pistol is, of course, characteristic of the game and how poorly the weapon actually works is in line with how Kindred treats its staff. However, I would like to see some more weapons or something similar, with the same Kindred spirit incorporated in it.

HUMOR IS THE BEST MEDICINE

So the story is not spectacular, but it is still good. Your favorite AI, EKO, will give you compliments or cynical commentary throughout your journey, always creating hilarious moments. The game has thoughtful dialogues and really funny pranks that you see in the descriptions of items, the challenging nature of the Viper AI (which sends the robots towards you) and determines the general atmosphere.

Typhoon Studios’ Journey to the Savage Planet is one of the funniest games I’ve played and I can’t give it enough credit for that. It’s just been really thought through, in every little detail of the game. There are also new ads in the game and if you have played the base game, you know that those little commercials makes you laugh, scream, and roar all at the same time.

The game offers the player a new world, a beautiful one, but the central storyline is quite short. You will be done with it quickly, especially if you have already picked up all upgrades in advance. However, there is more to do than just fight robots. There are various collectibles spread around the world that you can save for some new upgrades.

I noticed in my review on Xbox One, that just like in the base game, you have to find certain items that are often linked to searching a certain area or defeating a number of enemies. Any excuse to re-explore the DL-C1 world is fine for me. Whether that is flying through the new jetpack rings or exploring the world in search of the best Easter eggs.

CONCLUSION

If you enjoyed the base game, Journey to the Savage Planet: Hot Garbage will definitely spoil you with more jokes. The game knows what it is good at and you can see that on your screen. The wonderfully colorful environments mixed with the best humor we know in current game terms are both a pleasure.

Hot Garbage throws some interesting new creatures at the player, however, the world is mostly filled with creatures we have seen before. I hope to see more of Typhoon Studios and 505 Games’ game in the future.
