Anime and Manga News This Week (03/29-04/04)

It’s the start of a new week and a new set of anime and manga news to cover, so I’ll be listing the best updates and announcements we received last week.

Wonder Egg Priority “Special Edition”

Last week, the official website and Twitter account for CloverWorks’ Wonder Egg Priority announced that the original anime will receive a “Special Edition” broadcast on June 29 titled Wonder Egg Priority Special Edition. A promotional video was also revealed.

Wonder Egg Priority premiered on January 12. Funimation streams the anime as it airs, and describes the story as:

This is the story of Ai, an introverted girl whose fate is forever changed when she acquires a mysterious “Wonder Egg” from a deserted arcade. That night, her dreams blend into reality, and as other girls obtain their own Wonder Eggs, Ai discovers new friends—and the magic within herself.

Shika no Ō Trailer

Last week, a new trailer was revealed for the anime film adaptation of TOHO’s Nahoko Uehashi’s Shika no Ō (The Deer King) novel, along with the cast, a new visual, and September 10 premiere date.

Laid-Back Camp Movie Premiere Date

Last week, the official website for the anime adaptation of Afro’s Yuru Camp (Yurukyan△, Laid-Back Camp Δ) manga and ANN announced the staff and 2022 premiere date for Laid-Back Camp Movie. Additionally, director Yoshiaki Kyougoku drew the imageboard art that is previewed in the concept visual.

Re:cycle of Penguindrum Anime Film Announced

The 10th anniversary website for director Kunihiko Ikuhara’s Mawaru Penguindrum anime and ANN announced that the Re:cycle of Penguindrum compilation film project is being produced. The film will reportedly re-edit all 24 episodes of the anime with new sequences added. Hoshino also drew an illustration of the Princess of the Crystal for the 10th anniversary.

The original Mawaru Penguindrum anime aired in 2011. Anime News Network describes the series as:

The psychological drama story begins when a girl named Himari Takakura passes away after going out on a trip with her brothers Kanba and Shōma. A spirit in a penguin hat appears and miraculously saves her. However, in exchange for saving Himari’s life, the brothers must search for the Penguindrum for the spirit. A trio of strange penguins accompany the siblings on their quest.

Liar Liar Anime Adaptation

Kadokawa announced that Haruki Kuō’s Liar Liar light novel series is receiving an anime adaptation. The novel launched on Kadokawa’s MF Bunko imprint with art by konomi in April 2019.

Anime News Network describes the series as:

The “academy x mind game x romantic comedy” story is set on the “Academy” island where students battle to determine their rankings. Hiroto Shinohara earned the highest ever grade in this school’s entrance exam, the toughest in the entire country. On his first day at the school, he takes down the previous reigning queen, Sarasa Saionji, and becomes the fastest ever student to join the school’s elite “Seven Stars.”

Except, he didn’t really. It’s all a lie. Now to maintain his top ranking, he must fight these school mind games with lies and bluffs. He does whatever it takes with the help of the cute “cheat maid” Shirayuki Himeji (voiced by Miku Itō in a previous promotional video) and even Saionji (who is actually a phony herself).

Belle Premiere date

Last week, a full trailer was revealed for Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu’s new Belle “Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime”, (The Dragon and the Freckled Princess) anime film which reveals the film’s July premiere date. Additionally, the staff unveiled the character designs of the titular character Belle by Jin Kim (Frozen, Tangled, Big Hero 6, Moana).

Studio Chizu describes the story:

Our protagonist, Suzu, is a 17-year old high school girl, who lives in the countryside of Kochi Prefecture with her father, after losing her mother at a young age.

She loves singing with her mother more than anything else, but as a result of her mother’s death was no longer able to sing.

It wasn’t long before she and her father grew more and more distant from each other, and Suzu closed her heart to the rest of the world.

When Suzu felt that writing music was her only purpose left in life, she then discovers the massive online space known as “U,” where she takes on her persona, Belle.

Another me. Another reality. We are no longer limited to a single world.

Suzu quickly realizes that when she is inside “U” as her avatar, Belle, she can sing quite naturally. As she continues to showcase her own music in the virtual world, she fast becomes the rising star of “U.”

Nonetheless, that surprise is short-lived. Suddenly, a mysterious dragon-shaped creature appears before her…

Yasuke Trailer

Netflix revealed the first trailer for the anime series Yasuke, produced by MAPPA. The anime is set to release on April 29.  A new key visual was also revealed.

Netflix describes the story as:

In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.The story of Yasuke, the first African samurai who actually served the legendary Oda Nobunaga, will be released to the world.

Knights of Sidonia titled Sidonia no Kishi: Ai Tsumugu Hoshi Trailer

The official website for the anime film adaptation of Tsutomu Nihei’s Knights of Sidonia titled Sidonia no Kishi: Ai Tsumugu Hoshi revealed a new trailer for the film, previewing CAPSULE’s theme song “Hikari no Disco.” The film is set to premiere on May 14.

Gyakuten Sekai no Denchi Shōjo Anime Adaptation

Last week, a new original anime from director Masaomi Andō and studio Lerche titled Gyakuten Sekai no Denchi Shōjo (Turnabout World’s Battery Girl) was announced alongside a new key visual and staff listing.

Shin Kamen Rider Film Announced

It was announced during the “Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary Project Unveiling” that Hideki Anno, who’s known for directing the Evangelion series is writing and directing a live-action film for Shin Kamen Rider, produced by Toei and is set to premiere in March 2023. A trailer was also revealed.

Anno commented on the news saying:

“Five decades ago, almost every grade school boy was enthralled by the life-size hero Kamen Rider. I was no exception. I launched this project out of the desire to give back a little for the great gifts I received from the TV shows five decades ago, in the form of a movie five decades later.”

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean Anime Adaptation Announced

During the “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure the Animation Special Event ~JOESTAR Inherited Soul ~”
livestream event, it was announced that Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean
manga will receive an anime adaptation staring Ai Fairouz as the protagonist Jolyne Cujoh.

Fairouz commented on the new anime:

I cannot live without the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, and it is also what inspired me to
take on voice-acting as a profession. So when I heard that I was going to be able to participate
in the series, I was lost for words and surprised that “Even a Stand would be blown to the
moon.” I cried so much as it was literally the moment my dream came true, which I have chased
over for 12 years.
I love and admire Jolyne as a character and her beautiful, strong nature gave me strength
especially during my student years, so I am grateful for the opportunity to voice Jolyne.

Anime News Network describes the story as:

The manga is the sixth part of Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga, and it continues the
story from the previous entries. The manga takes place in 2011, after Golden Wind, and centers
on Jolyne Cujoh, the daughter of Stardust Crusaders protagonist Jotaro Kujo. After Jolyne is
framed for murder and sent to prison, she must face off against a former follower of Dio.
