Verizon Wireless, one of the major cell phone carriers in the United States, is known for its fast data speeds and FiOS cable service. But what does that have to do with game consoles, you might ask? Well, Verizon has been preparing to sell PlayStation 5 consoles in select stores.
PlayStation 5 consoles are extremely difficult to come across in the wild, thanks to scalpers buying the consoles en masse and selling them at exorbitant prices. Getting at those people isn’t why we’re here, though, and let’s discuss selling those consoles.
Buying from Verizon
Going to Verizon’s website, you can find that you can purchase the consoles, however, they’re currently sold out. This could mean one of two things; either that the consoles are sold out, or they merely aren’t ready to be sold just yet, and that the listing is a placeholder, so if you manage to get one of this, getting a table to set it up could be useful.
Verizon spokesman Chris Serico has gone on record and said that the company will be selling “a very limited quantity” of PlayStation 5 consoles “in a handful of pilot stores” as well as online. Those looking to buy online will also need to have a Verizon wireless account and active service with the carrier.
Purchasing online has extra steps needed, but mainly, it’s clear that it’s in an attempt to fight off scalpers from that retailer. Scalpers have gotten to the point where purchasing a console goes well into the thousands of dollars. Even purchasing one at that price is several times higher than its retail price, $499.99.
We’ll update further if more retailers attempt to do methods like this to protect the sale of PlayStation 5 consoles.
